When this book was offered to me to review, I already knew it’d be a good one. We have another one of this author’s books (One Spring Lamb) and it’s still a favorite after all these months.
I’m also a sucker for holiday books — well, maybe not Halloween. I’ve never really gotten that one…but I digress…
One Big Turkey is, as you’ve guessed, written and illustrated to focus on Thanksgiving. It’s written in well thought out rhymes and is definitely fun to read aloud. Plus, the author herself has done all the illustrations. It’s pretty adorable and it’s apparent the time invested by Kennedy to create a quality new board book for children.
Additionally, it’s a counting book. Each page counts one number twice. Like this:
“One big turkey with his feathers proud and tall,
One squirrel hopping where the pretty leaves fall.”
Counting up to ten, this book describes all sorts of lovely things that happen during the fall season. It gets the child (and the reader) in a cozy mood perfect for hearing the message of the last couple pages — that is, that we have so much to be thankful for to our God and how blessed we are.
If you’re looking for a simple book to teach gratitude and appreciation of God’s blessings — or even if you’re just looking for a new holiday book — you should definitely pick up this One Big Turkey.
