This one who is life itself was revealed to us, and we have seen him. And now we testify and proclaim to you that he is the one who is eternal life.

It floors me sometimes that we are reading words actually written by people who knew Jesus. Who spent loads of time with him. Who touched him and heard his voice, his laugh. Who had the privilege of seeing firsthand how to live a holy life.

I mean, can you just imagine?

He was with the Father, and then he was revealed to us. We proclaim to you what we ourselves have actually seen and heard so that you may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We are writing these things so that you may fully share our joy.

It’s not like we are playing the “telephone” game and getting a very skewed report of what really happened, as if the story had to go through multiple generations of telling. It is being told by Jesus’s friends themselves. It must be taken seriously.

This the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin…

I trust these guys. I trust what they is true. I trust that God wouldn’t let this message be part of His Word unless He wanted us to hear them. Therefore, it’s extremely important to “live in the light.” To constantly strive to live the holy life that Jesus lived while he was on earth.

…those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him. Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.

It’s not complicated. Stay in the Word and God will continue to guide you. Let’s be the light.
